Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are capable of forming a variety of highly specialized cell types including bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon, fat, liver and many others. These observations have been extensively characterized both at Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. and at leading academic institutions.

The therapeutic value of MSC treatment however, goes well beyond the ability of the cells to contribute to new tissue formation. MSC integration within diseased or damaged tissue has the effect of favorably altering the inflammatory response. In cases where the damage involves ischemia (low oxygen), MSC treatment has demonstrated the ability to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels. At the resolution of the healing process, the therapy has shown a significant reduction in scar formation. The generation of a strong knowledge base describing MSC physiology has allowed Osiris Therapeutics to develop a clear selection strategy for potential new targets of MSC therapy.
